Devices and Villainy (2023)

Published on August 23, 2023, Devices and Villainy was written over the course of six weeks while I was living in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Inspired to varying degrees by the copy-paste sameness of the apartment complexes which mirrored my own and the stories I made up about my neighbors, whose lives I viewed only in glimpses; Herman Melville's Moby Dick and Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged; and the television masterpiece Avatar: The Last Airbender, this 312-page piece of fiction follows Jon on his quest to the center of a future which, only in the latter half of the book, does he come to believe is dystopian. Just as the universal good, provided and vouchsafed by the government in Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is 'happiness,' the universal good in this world is 'stability,' and Jon quickly becomes a threat to the stable world the government constructed.

This book was a promise I made to myself: that I would finish what I started; that I would challenge myself in a way (writing) in which I had not before; that I would try at something. Though now my thoughts differ, I remember feeling quite happy with the result.
